Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days Marks Director’s Box Office Comeback with Strong Performance

German director Wim Wenders has made a triumphant return to the box office with his latest film, Perfect Days. The Tokyo-set drama, which stars Japanese actor Koji Yakusho as a man who leaves his former life behind to work as a toilet cleaner, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and received critical acclaim. Now, according to collated figures released by sales agent The Match Factory, Perfect Days has become Wenders’ most successful film in 15 years.

Perfect Days is currently playing in theaters across several countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, and the Baltics. In Germany, the film enjoyed a strong opening week, grossing $209,014 (€190,611) and attracting 19,859 admissions. Since then, it has accumulated a total of 171,298 admissions and a gross of $1.8M (€1.64M). In France, Perfect Days has been in theaters for seven weeks, selling 356,109 tickets and grossing $2.8M (€2.57M). Italy has also shown strong support for the film, with an opening week gross of $1m (€962,450) from 142,007 admissions.

The Match Factory announced that Perfect Days’ worldwide box office gross stands at $8,566,110 so far. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it surpasses the box office results of Wenders’ previous films over the past 15 years. The director, known for his acclaimed works such as Wings Of Desire and Paris, Texas, has made a remarkable comeback with Perfect Days, earning critical acclaim and strong audience support.

Perfect Days is set to open in Spain and Sweden this weekend, with further theatrical releases planned for Norway, Denmark, Finland, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, the UK & Ireland, Latin America, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand in the coming weeks. The film has generated significant buzz since its premiere at Cannes, resulting in a sold-out distribution deal for The Match Factory. The anticipation is high as the film prepares for its US release on February 7, 2024, with Neon handling distribution.

Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days has not only marked a successful return to the box office for the acclaimed director but has also surpassed the performance of his previous films over the past 15 years. With a strong international box office performance and critical acclaim, Perfect Days has solidified Wenders’ reputation as a masterful filmmaker. Audiences around the world can look forward to experiencing this captivating drama as it continues its theatrical run in various countries and prepares for its highly anticipated US release.
