The Summer Phenoms: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer Break Box Office Records

Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie has taken the world by storm this summer, surpassing The Super Mario Bros Movie to become the highest-grossing film of the year globally. As of Friday, Barbie has earned over $1.365 billion at the box office, solidifying its position as the front-runner of the summer season.

Barbie, distributed by Warner Bros, has made a significant impact in 75 overseas markets. Its international gross stands at an impressive $763.4 million, with the top five performing countries being the UK, Australia, Mexico, Germany, and France. The United Kingdom takes the lead with $117.8 million in box office earnings, closely followed by Australia with $54.1 million.

Once again, Christopher Nolan proves his prowess as a filmmaker with his latest release, Oppenheimer. This Universal title continues to dominate the box office, poised to surpass $850 million globally by the end of the weekend. Surpassing his own masterpiece Inception from 2010, Oppenheimer secures its place as Nolan’s third highest-grossing film worldwide.

While Barbie reigns supreme as the highest-grossing film of the year, Oppenheimer is hot on its heels. This seventh-weekend release is positioned to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the third highest-grossing film of 2023 globally. The only films ahead of Oppenheimer are Barbie and The Super Mario Bros Movie.

Universal Studios can celebrate having three films in the top five highest-grossing films of the year globally, with Oppenheimer’s success contributing significantly to their triumph.

As for specific international markets, Oppenheimer has garnered particular attention. It has become the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2023 in foreign territories, and the best-performing film from Christopher Nolan’s filmography in 58 markets.

The United Kingdom leads the way as the top-performing overseas hub for Oppenheimer, generating an impressive $69.7 million in box office revenue. Following closely are Germany with $44.6 million and France with $38.7 million. Australia and Spain round out the top five with $24.8 million and $20.3 million, respectively.

Notably, Oppenheimer has seen incredible success in China, debuting as the number one film and maintaining its position throughout the week. Chinese audiences have given the film a remarkable score of 9.5 on Maoyan, a popular movie rating platform. With an estimated $23 million in box office earnings, the film has exceeded expectations by outperforming previous Nolan releases.

Maoyan predicts that Oppenheimer will earn around $64 million during its full run in China. However, it is essential to approach these projections with caution, as they are subject to change.

As the summer of 2023 comes to a close, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer have left an indelible mark on the box office. These two remarkable films have shattered records and captivated audiences worldwide. With their exceptional storytelling and dazzling visuals, Barbie and Oppenheimer have cemented their place in cinematic history. As the final numbers for the weekend box office are yet to be tallied, fans eagerly anticipate more exciting news to come.
