The Monty Python Star, Eric Idle, Criticizes Co-Founders and Netflix

Over the weekend, Eric Idle, renowned as a member of Monty Python, took to X/Twitter to express his discontent and disappointment towards his fellow co-founders, John Cleese and Terry Gilliam. In addition, Idle didn’t hold back in his criticism of Netflix.

Idle began his tirade by expressing his surprise at the drastic decline in Monty Python’s income. He lamented the fact that, at the age of 80, he is still compelled to work for a living. Contrary to popular belief, Idle claimed that the Python brand is not as lucrative as assumed. He stated, “Python is a disaster,” and revealed that only Spamalot managed to generate significant revenue, but that was over two decades ago.

Management Woes

Pointing fingers at the mismanagement of the Python brand, Idle blamed Gilliam and his daughter, Holly. Holly manages HDG Projects, the company responsible for overseeing Monty Python and organizing the group’s 2014 reunion shows in London. Idle suggested that having a Gilliam in a managerial position led to disastrous consequences. He remarked, “But I guess if you put a Gilliam child in as your manager you should not be so surprised. One Gilliam is bad enough. Two can take out any company.” While Holly Gilliam has yet to respond to these accusations, it remains to be seen whether she will address the issue.

In response to an X user’s inquiry about his relationship with Cleese, Idle shared that he has not seen Cleese in seven years. Although this may have saddened some fans, Idle seemed indifferent, stating, “Why? It makes me happy.” It appears that the once close bond between Idle and Cleese has dissipated over time.

When a follower suggested that Netflix produce a documentary on the rise and fall of Monty Python, Idle responded fervently, “Fuck Netflix and fuck documentaries.” It seems that Idle holds a negative opinion of both the streaming giant and the idea of delving into the history of Monty Python.

In the midst of his controversial comments, Idle received praise from his daughter, Lily. She commended her father for speaking out and standing up against bullies and narcissists. Lily expressed her pride in Idle and emphasized that he deserves validation for his honesty.

Despite the financial challenges faced by Monty Python, Idle reassured his supporters that he is doing fine. Engaged in writing and creating new shows, Idle emphasized that this is his passion and the activity he enjoys the most. Fueled by his extensive experience since 1963 and the guidance of his influential mentors, Idle remains determined to continue his artistic endeavors.

In 1969, Idle co-founded Monty Python alongside Graham Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Jones, and Palin. While the dynamics within the group may have shifted over time, Idle’s recent outburst has shed light on the challenges faced by the comedy troupe and the individual members, leading fans to question the future of Monty Python.
