The Global Success of Barbie and Oppenheimer: Box Office Hits and Milestones

Warner Bros’ latest film, Barbie, has achieved an impressive milestone by crossing the $600 million mark globally. With Friday’s figures included, the movie’s total worldwide box office collection stands at $637.5 million. The international box office alone contributed $350.5 million, with a significant boost of $30.1 million on Friday in 69 offshore markets. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie is predicted to exceed the $700 million mark by the end of this weekend.

Top 5 Overseas Markets

Let’s take a closer look at the top five overseas markets for Barbie as of Friday. Leading the pack is the United Kingdom, with an astonishing total of $50.8 million. Following closely behind is Mexico, with a remarkable $35.6 million. Brazil takes the third spot with $26 million, while Australia secures fourth place with $22.7 million. Surprisingly, Barbie has also made quite an impact in China, raking in $19.8 million so far.

Oppenheimer’s Impressive Run

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, distributed by Universal Pictures, is also making waves at the box office. It is expected to reach an estimated gross of $395 million by the end of this weekend. This impressive figure would position Oppenheimer as the sixth highest-grossing Nolan film of all time, surpassing the likes of Tenet and Batman Begins.

Continued Overseas Success

In its second week, Oppenheimer is projected to earn an additional $67.6 million from overseas markets, bringing its international total to an impressive $221.5 million. The film’s success is particularly notable in certain markets, as it has already become the highest-grossing Nolan film of all time in 28 countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey. Furthermore, Oppenheimer holds the distinction of being the biggest non-superhero Nolan film in 39 markets, such as Mexico, Brazil, Norway, Turkey, Philippines, and Chile.

Universal Pictures’ Milestone

In another momentous achievement, Universal Pictures has surpassed $2 billion at the international box office. This makes it only the fourth studio to reach this milestone since the onset of the pandemic. Additionally, this marks the seventh time that Universal Pictures has crossed this threshold overall. The studio’s success is a testament to its ability to deliver highly successful films that resonate with global audiences.

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer have struck box office gold on a global scale. Barbie’s journey to surpass the $700 million mark has captivated audiences worldwide, with outstanding performances in key markets like the UK, Mexico, and China. Oppenheimer, on the other hand, has solidified its position as a top-performing Christopher Nolan film, breaking records in numerous countries. These achievements, along with Universal Pictures’ recent milestone, highlight the resilience and enduring appeal of cinema in the face of challenging times.
