The Future of SAG-AFTRA Contract Negotiations

Last year, the entertainment industry faced major disruptions due to the writers and actors strikes, which greatly impacted scripted television and movies. Fortunately, reality shows, variety series, and game shows were able to continue filming under the Network Television Code Contract. As the current contract with SAG-AFTRA is set to expire on June 30, 2024, the union is gearing up for renewal talks to secure a new agreement.

SAG-AFTRA has begun conducting meetings in preparation for the upcoming contract negotiations. The union is urging members from various sectors of the industry, including singers, dancers, stunt performers, voice actors, and background artists, to participate in these meetings. By gathering input from a diverse range of professionals, SAG-AFTRA aims to develop comprehensive proposals for the negotiation process.

Focus on Non-Dramatic Programs

One of the key aspects of the Network Television Code Contract is its coverage of non-dramatic programs, including daytime serials, variety shows, quiz programs, reality TV, talk shows, news broadcasts, sports programs, and promotional announcements. This broad scope allows for a wide range of content to be produced under the contract’s guidelines, ensuring continuity in programming even during periods of labor unrest.

The previous contract, which was approved in June 2022, has been instrumental in supporting the industry by generating over $200 million in covered earnings for SAG-AFTRA members. This significant contribution highlights the importance of reaching a new agreement that is beneficial for both the union and its members. As negotiations progress, it will be crucial to strike a balance between the needs of the union and the demands of the industry.

The upcoming contract negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and industry stakeholders will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the entertainment landscape. By engaging in productive discussions and collaboration, both parties can work towards a mutually beneficial agreement that supports the growth and sustainability of the industry. As the talks unfold, it will be essential for all involved to prioritize transparency, fairness, and inclusivity to ensure a successful outcome for all.
