The Extraordinary Tale of Marinus: A Heroic Rescue During the Korean War

In an exciting development within the film industry, renowned filmmaker Vadim Perelman has been announced as the director for the forthcoming movie “Marinus.” This captivating film will recount the incredible rescue of 14,000 Korean evacuees by sea near the end of the Korean War. Adapted from the book “Ship of Miracles,” written by J. Craig Stiles, “Marinus” follows the riveting journey of a merchant marine captain and a Korean doctor who commanded a vessel rated for only 65 passengers but ended up saving thousands. Their bravery was tested in the face of enemy submarines, fighter planes, and even a Communist spy on board. Yet, against all odds, not a single life was lost. The voyage even witnessed the birth of five babies, who safely arrived at a South Korean harbor on Christmas Day.

The impact of this remarkable tale reverberates even today. The captain, profoundly moved by the experience, later became a Benedictine monk. Although he has since passed away, he is currently under consideration for sainthood within the Catholic Church. The five babies born during the journey have become known as the “Kimchi Babies.” In South Korea, these individuals are treated like celebrities, with their lives closely followed. It is worth noting that one of the couples saved on the ship were the parents of Moon Jae-In, the former President of South Korea. Additionally, religious leader Reverend Sun Myung Moon was also aboard the vessel, adding further depth to the story’s historical significance.

A Story of Human Resilience and Triumph

The project, often compared to iconic films such as “Schindler’s List,” “Dunkirk,” and “Titanic,” has been taken on by Steve Lee Jones and his production company, Bee Holder Productions. Jones expresses his enthusiasm for the film, describing it as a passion project of immense proportions. He highlights that the story’s sheer extraordinariness is mind-blowing, particularly as it is all based on true events. Jones firmly believes in the power of this tale, shedding light on how ordinary individuals can rise to the occasion and achieve remarkable feats when confronted with extraordinary circumstances.

Vadim Perelman, the acclaimed director chosen to helm “Marinus,” brings a wealth of talent and expertise to the project. Perelman’s name first gained prominence with his film “House of Sand & Fog,” which received critical acclaim and recognition. His prowess in storytelling, particularly in capturing the essence of the hero’s journey, makes him an ideal choice for bringing “Marinus” to life on the silver screen. Perelman expresses his deep admiration for the story and the screenplay, emphasizing his intention to provide the project with meticulous care. His vision encompasses not only a thrilling and epic sea spectacle but also a profound exploration of redemption, humanity, and faith within the captivating character of Captain LaRue.

Future Development and Recognition

As the film progresses, casting will begin once the SAG-AFTRA strike has ended, with a projected start date in Q4 of 2024. However, the team remains open to exploring an alternative agreement to commence production. Supporting the production needs of “Marinus,” Banc of California is providing tailored banking services to ensure the film’s realization. Julien P. Bourgon, the Senior Vice President of Media & Entertainment at the bank, will further contribute as an Executive Producer. The Bee Holder executive team, consisting of Kevin Human and Jeremy Christensen, will serve as co-producers alongside Tyler Condon and Lee Shipman, adding their creative expertise to the project.

Vadim Perelman’s previous film, “House of Sand & Fog,” garnered significant acclaim, earning three Oscar nominations in 2004. Ben Kingsley received a Best Actor nod, Shohreh Aghdashloo was recognized for Best Supporting Actress, and the original score by James Horner received a nomination. Perelman’s exceptional talent is further recognized by his representation with Artist International Group, while Bee Holder Productions is represented by Michael J. Weiss of Concentric Law.

The forthcoming film “Marinus” promises to captivate audiences with its extraordinary tale of heroism, resilience, and triumph. The visionary direction of Vadim Perelman, combined with the passionate commitment of the production team, ensures that this remarkable story will unfold on screen with the utmost care and dedication. As audiences eagerly await the release of “Marinus,” they can anticipate being transported back to a pivotal moment in history, where ordinary individuals rose to become true heroes.
