The Birth of BASK: GDH Teams Up with Baz Poonpiriya for New Production House

Thai studio GDH has recently announced their partnership with director Baz Poonpiriya to create a new production house called BASK. This collaboration aims to bring a fresh perspective on Thai and Asian culture to global audiences by working closely with U.S.-based producers.

Through BASK, Poonpiriya and GDH will co-develop, co-finance, and co-produce projects with U.S.-based studios and producers. The goal is to offer a variety of genres and narratives that explore different aspects of Thai and Asian culture while empowering voices that are often overlooked but have important stories to share.

Some of the upcoming collaborators that have already been named include Justin Lin, known for directing the Fast & Furious films, and Anita Gou from Kindred Spirit (The Farewell). Vanridee Pongsittisak, a top Thai producer, will spearhead the joint venture from GDH’s side, bringing her experience and expertise to the table.

Vanridee Pongsittisak expressed her commitment to providing a platform for voices that are passionate and have powerful stories to tell. She aims to showcase these personal yet universally resonant stories on screen, allowing them to reach a wider audience and make an impact.

Poonpiriya, the acclaimed director of Bad Genius, shared his goal of being an international voice that speaks loudly and authentically. By amplifying his voice, he hopes to represent and connect with more people through his work, bringing meaningful stories to the forefront.

After the success of Bad Genius, a thriller centered around exam cheating, Poonpiriya ventured into directing a road trip drama shot in Thailand and New York with Wong Kar-Wai. The film, One For the Road, received critical acclaim and even won a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival, showcasing Poonpiriya’s versatility and talent.

The collaboration between GDH and Baz Poonpiriya to create BASK is a promising endeavor that has the potential to elevate Thai and Asian cinema on a global scale. With a focus on empowering unique voices and sharing diverse narratives, BASK aims to make a significant impact in the film industry.
