Taylor Swift’s Past Relationship with John Mayer

Many of the songs on “Speak Now,” including “Dear John,” are thought to be about Taylor Swift’s relationship with John Mayer. The relationship took place for a few months in 2009 and 2010, when she was 19 and he was 31. Despite the years that have passed, Taylor Swift’s fans are still unhappy with John Mayer over the questionable age gap. His comments section on Instagram is often flooded with call-outs over it, particularly Taylor’s famous line from “Dear John”: “Don’t you think nineteen’s too young?”

During Taylor Swift’s Minneapolis stop from her Eras Tour, ahead of singing the “surprise song” of the night, the star made an effort to keep her fans away from her ex’s comments section. As she highlighted the beautiful moments and gestures she has seen from her fans at her concerts, she asked her fans to extend that kindness and gentleness to their internet activities. Taylor explained that she is putting this album out because she wants to own her music and does not care about anything that happened when she was 19, except for the songs that she wrote and the memories they made together. She makes it clear that she is not putting this album out so that her fans can go and defend her on the internet against someone she might have written a song about. Taylor insisted that she does not care and that they have all grown up.

Following Taylor’s warning to her fans, John Mayer’s comments section on his Instagram page looks different now.
