Rob Brydon Addresses Critics Over Role in Barbie Movie

British actor Rob Brydon has recently opened up about his experience playing Sugar Daddy Ken in the record-breaking Barbie movie. Despite the film’s immense success, Brydon revealed that he has faced criticism from Barbie fans questioning his casting in such a prominent Hollywood production.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, Brydon admitted that the negative comments have been hurtful. He shared, “It does slightly sting that some people are saying, ‘What’s he doing in such a big Hollywood movie?'”. The actor, known for his roles in British comedy shows and quiz programs, understands that his decision to pass on major acting opportunities in America has contributed to this skepticism from fans.

A Famous Fan’s Influence

However, Brydon’s casting in the Barbie movie is not purely a result of chance. The Welsh actor revealed that his role came about because of his connection with a famous fan – Margot Robbie. The Australian actress, who was living in London during the early stages of her film career, was an avid follower of the British comedy series Gavin & Stacey, in which Brydon played the character of Uncle Bryn.

Brydon recounted the unexpected turn of events, stating, “You never know who’s watching, do you? Margot loved Gavin & Stacey, and a few years ago, a friend of hers asked me to record a video message for her as Bryn. To be honest, I’d forgotten all about it, and then I get the call for Barbie, and the response to it has been extraordinary.”

While Brydon humbly downplays his own contribution, he emphasizes the importance for young actors to give their best efforts in every role. It was Brydon’s versatile performances in projects like Human Remains, a BBC comedy where he portrayed seven different men navigating various divorces, that caught the attention of Barbie movie director Greta Gerwig.

Other British Talents in Barbie

Brydon is not the only British actor to join the star-studded cast of the Barbie movie. Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in Doctor Who, Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton, and Emma Mackey from Sex Education have also been confirmed as part of the ensemble. Additionally, pop sensation Dua Lipa not only appears in the film but has also contributed to its soundtrack, adding even more star power to the project.

Despite the allure of Hollywood and the opportunities it presents, Brydon has consciously chosen to remain in the UK. He revealed that he turned down several offers to work on American productions because he wanted to be close to his family. The actor explained, “I am not prepared to make the sacrifices to make films or TV in Hollywood or Atlanta or Vancouver, wherever the tax breaks for filming are these days because, believe me, there are sacrifices. There has to be something inside you that needs that level of success and fame. I don’t have it.”

Brydon’s decision underscores his values and priorities, demonstrating that he places importance on maintaining a fulfilling personal life over pursuing global fame. While his choice may have led to questions and criticism among some Barbie fans, the actor remains content with his path and the success it has brought him thus far.

Embracing Opportunities

Rob Brydon’s journey from a British comedian to a prominent role in a blockbuster Hollywood movie serves as a reminder to aspiring actors. The path to success is not always linear, and unexpected opportunities can arise when one least expects them. Brydon’s story is a testament to the power of talent and the impact it can have on influential individuals, ultimately leading to remarkable breakthroughs in an actor’s career.

As the Barbie movie continues to enchant audiences worldwide, it is evident that Rob Brydon’s casting was not misplaced. His portrayal of Sugar Daddy Ken has garnered positive responses, proving that sometimes unconventional choices can yield extraordinary results. Brydon’s story serves as inspiration for young actors to persevere, embrace every role, and trust that their dedication and talent will eventually open doors to unexpected and remarkable opportunities.
