Paying Tribute to Paul Reubens: A Fond Farewell to Pee-Wee Herman

Paul Reubens, best known for his iconic role as Pee-Wee Herman, sadly passed away on Sunday at the age of 70 after battling cancer. His legacy in Hollywood will never be forgotten, and those who had the privilege of working with him are now sharing their heartfelt tributes. One such individual is S. Epatha Merkerson, who worked alongside Reubens in the beloved children’s series, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Merkerson, currently starring in NBC’s hit series Chicago Med, portrayed Reba the Mail Lady in 16 episodes of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.

Unexpected Beginnings

In an email interview with Deadline, Merkerson fondly recalled her first encounter with Reubens during her audition for the show. She candidly shared, “I always called him Pablo. I will truly miss my friend… We met at my audition for Pee-wee’s Playhouse. I did not know of the character… my nephew Sean told me who he was. However, when I walked into the audition I was introduced to a man named Paul Reubens in cut-off jeans, with long hair and a goatee. He looked like a 60s reject!” Merkerson admitted to being confused by Reubens’ appearance from the start, and Reubens took full advantage of her bewilderment during her audition.

A Surprising Friendship

Merkerson shared, “When I left there I thought, ‘I’ll never get that job!’ I couldn’t concentrate; he kept making me laugh! Well, fast forward to the first day of shooting, he came over to me in costume and I realized then that he knew all along that I had NO idea who Pee-wee Herman was. We became fast friends.” The bond that formed between Reubens and Merkerson on the set of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse was undeniable, and Merkerson treasures the memories of their time together.

A Legendary Character

Of course, Paul Reubens’ portrayal of Pee-Wee Herman extended far beyond Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. He also brought the character to life in various film and TV projects, including Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-wee, and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
