Michael Murphy Departs Beyond International to Launch Rockabill Media

After an impressive 19 years with producer-distributor Beyond International, well-known international TV executive Michael Murphy is bidding farewell to the company. Murphy has decided to venture into the world of entrepreneurship, launching his own business called Rockabill Media. This exciting new endeavor will be unveiled at the prestigious MIPCOM Cannes, where Murphy will introduce three intriguing projects that he has been working on.

A Shift in the Industry

The departure of Murphy comes after Banijay’s acquisition of Beyond International for an estimated $30 million early this year. Beyond’s distribution business has since been absorbed into the Banijay Rights catalog. Murphy had been an integral part of Beyond since 2009, taking on crucial roles such as General Manager for Beyond Distribution and, more recently, Executive Director of Beyond Entertainment Holdings and BeyondTNC, a specialist music content producer and distributor.

Although Murphy has owned Rockabill Media since 2012, he is now proud to launch this production outfit as a separate business entity. Rockabill Media will focus on international TV and film projects while also providing consultancy services in key areas like content strategy, distribution, executive production, and financing. With the official opening of Rockabill Media taking place this week, Murphy is wasting no time and has already begun working on three exciting projects.

Project 1: Ismael – A Gripping Tale of Family and Espionage

One of the projects that Murphy is spearheading as executive producer is the feature film Ismael. Based on the novel by Roy Jacobson, this Irish film tells the story of a former MI5 operative who must utilize his old skills to protect his family. Alongside Murphy, Norwegian producer Tomas Backström (known for Insomnia) is also on board as an executive producer for this gripping espionage thriller.

Project 2: Wir Sind Maschinen – A Landmark Music Documentary Series

Murphy is also involved as an executive producer in the creation of Wir Sind Maschinen, a groundbreaking three-part music documentary series. Produced by Spring Films, the team behind the critically acclaimed documentary The Act of Killing, this series explores the profound impact of German electronic music on the world. Murphy’s deep passion for this project is evident, and it promises to be a compelling and captivating documentary series.

Project 3: Adapting Existing Female-Led IP

While details surrounding the third project remain scarce, it has been revealed that Rockabill Media is consulting on a fundraising round for a genre production company focused on adapting existing female-led intellectual property (IP). This project highlights Rockabill Media’s commitment to championing important stories and promoting diversity within the industry.

Michael Murphy’s Impressive Track Record

Before founding Rockabill Media, Murphy’s illustrious career included various significant roles in the industry. He previously served as the CEO of Windmill Lane Entertainment, the founder of Irish network Channel 6, Director of Programs at Ireland’s TV3, and even launched on-demand services for Yes Television. Murphy’s extensive experience as a broadcaster, producer, distributor, and his vast international network make him a valuable asset in the realm of content strategy and advising IP owners on the most lucrative creative and commercial paths.

With Rockabill Media, Michael Murphy is poised to make a lasting impact in the entertainment industry. His decision to launch his own production outfit opens up new possibilities for international TV and film projects. Additionally, Rockabill Media’s consultancy services will offer valuable guidance and expertise to content creators, ensuring the most effective strategies for success. As Rockabill Media takes its first steps, Murphy’s excitement is palpable, and his three captivating projects are just the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary journey in the world of media and entertainment.
