Cuckoo vs. Longlegs: A Box Office Comparison

Cuckoo, the latest horror film by Tilman Singer, hit theaters with a bang, earning over $3 million in its opening weekend. Starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens, the Alpine-set horror tells the story of a troubled 17-year-old named Gretchen who faces supernatural encounters in the German Alps. Despite not reaching the heights of Longlegs’ $22 million debut, Cuckoo managed to secure the 9th spot at the domestic box office, showcasing its potential for success.

Longlegs’ Steady Performance

On the other hand, Longlegs, directed by Osgood Perkins, is still holding its ground after five weeks in theaters. With an estimated $2 million in the latest weekend and a total gross of $71 million, the film has proven to be a consistent performer in the midst of studio blockbusters. Audiences continue to flock to theaters to experience this captivating story, highlighting Longlegs’ lasting appeal.

Other films like Didi and Sing Sing are also making waves at the box office. Didi, a Focus Features production starring Izaac Wang and Joan Chen, expanded to 200 theaters in its third week, earning $650k and amassing a total of $1.6 million. Sing Sing, directed by Greg Kewdar and featuring Colman Domingo, saw a successful weekend with $227k on 39 screens, reaching a total of $822k in its fifth week.

In the realm of limited releases, Kneecap by Rich Peppiatt and CatVideoFest 2024 by Will Braden are making their mark. Kneecap, a pseudo-biopic about an Irish rap trio, maintained its momentum in week 2 with $103.4k on 204 screens and an estimated total of nearly $820k. CatVideoFest 2024, distributed by Oscilloscope, grossed $102k on 55 screens, totaling $482k in earnings.

A new film, Good One, from Metrograph Pictures, made its debut with promising results. Grossing $30k at three locations and receiving rave reviews, the directorial debut by India Donaldson, starring Lily Collias, is set to expand into major markets by early September. The film’s success indicates a bright future ahead.

The box office landscape is diverse and rich with a variety of films catering to different audiences. While Cuckoo and Longlegs showcase differing opening weekend performances, both have found their place in the market. With notable holdovers and impressive limited releases, the film industry continues to thrive and offer a range of cinematic experiences for viewers to enjoy.
