Broadway Box Office Takes a Hit Due to Tony Awards and Poor Air Quality

Last week, some Broadway productions had to reduce their playing schedules due to the Tony Awards and poor air quality conditions in New York City. As a result, the total box office and attendance were down a bit, with 33 shows earning a total of $30,961,479 for the week ending June 11. Among the productions, four of them had preplanned seven-performance schedules, while Camelot and Hamilton had to cancel their Wednesday performances due to the poor air quality conditions on June 7.

Box Office Impact of Tony Award Victories

The box office impact of Tony Award victories for Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt, and Parade, among others, as well as the various shows’ Tony broadcast performances, are expected to be reflected on the box office charts in the coming weeks. Most of the nominated productions, including Kimberly Akimbo, Parade, and Leopoldstadt, reported strong numbers leading into the big night.

Strong Numbers for Some Productions

Best Musical winner Kimberly Akimbo filled 97% of seats at the Booth, grossing $526,175. Best Musical Revival Parade was at 95% of capacity at the Jacobs, grossing a hefty $1,059,730. Some Like It Hot and Shucked have also seen strong numbers in recent weeks, with the Tony wins of J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell expected to bring in additional box office gains.

Season to Date

Season to date, Broadway has grossed $95,194,113 with total attendance of 795,309 at 86% of capacity. Productions that filled at least 90% of their available seats included & Juliet, A Doll’s House, Aladdin, Fat Ham, Hadestown, Hamilton, Kimberly Akimbo, MJ, Moulin Rouge, Parade, Prima Facie, Shucked, Six, Sweeney Todd, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, and Wicked. However, Funny Girl was down considerably at the August Wilson, filling only 58% of seats with star Lea Michele’s planned weeklong absence.
