British Actors Shine at 75th Annual Emmys

Several British actors, including Taron Egerton, Daniel Radcliffe, Will Sharpe, Brian Cox, and Bella Ramsey, have been nominated for awards at the 75th annual Emmys. Despite it being a relatively quiet year for British shows overall, the return of “The Crown” after being ineligible in 2022 has earned the series another Outstanding Drama nomination.

Taron Egerton has ventured into television with Apple TV+’s “Black Bird,” which has secured him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. He will be competing against Daniel Radcliffe, who has received a nomination for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” on The Roku Channel. Will Sharpe has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in “The White Lotus,” where he will face off against fellow British star Matthew Macfadyen, who won the same award last year for his portrayal of Tom Wamsgams in “Succession.” Brian Cox has secured another Outstanding Actor nomination for “Succession,” and Bella Ramsey has received a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Drama for her breakout role in another HBO series, “The Last of Us.” Overall, “Succession” has earned an impressive 27 nominations.

The British cast of “Ted Lasso” has once again received multiple nominations. Phil Dunster has received his first nomination for his portrayal of footballer Jamie Tartt in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy category, alongside last year’s winner, Brett Goldstein. Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple have both been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. It has been a successful year for British actors, with the return of “The Crown” being a standout moment for British shows. This year, the Netflix series is eligible for awards in casting, cinematography, period costumes, and period and/or character hairstyling.

International Representation

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has also been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the late British royal Princess Diana in Netflix’s drama. Sarah Snook from Australia and Alexander Skarsgard from Sweden have also received nominations for “Succession.” In terms of other international representation, Apple TV+’s “Bad Sisters” has received two nominations, and Irish star Sharon Horgan has been nominated for Leading Actress in a Drama Series.

As is the case every year, the majority of shows featuring UK talent are produced in the United States. The Emmys show is scheduled to air on September 18, although potential actors and writers strikes could potentially lead to a delay.

Overall, the 75th annual Emmys have recognized the exceptional talent of British actors, with nominations spanning various categories and shows. The return of “The Crown” and the success of “Succession” have solidified the impact of British television in the international entertainment industry.
