A Disturbing Tale: Woman of the Hour

Netflix has made its mark at the Toronto Film Festival with a groundbreaking acquisition. The streaming giant is closing a deal for $11 million to secure the rights to “Woman of the Hour” – a fact-based thriller that also serves as Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut. This acquisition marks an important milestone for Netflix and sets the tone for an exciting festival.

Unlike other festival-bound pictures, “Woman of the Hour” did not sign the SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement. This decision could be attributed to the ongoing battle between streamers, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA over a new deal. While some films made quick deals by signing the IA, many productions chose not to take this route. Despite these challenges, “Woman of the Hour” has managed to make waves at the festival, capturing the attention of industry insiders and audiences alike.

“Woman of the Hour” delves into the eerie tale of a young woman who won a date on The Dating Game with a man who turned out to be a notorious serial killer. The captivating plot is based on the true story of Rodney Alcala, a convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of at least eight women. Investigators suspect that the actual number of victims could be as high as 130. The film explores Alcala’s dark charm and modus operandi, where he posed as a photographer in search of models to lure his victims.

An Unfortunate Choice

Cheryl Bradshaw, played by Anna Kendrick, is the contestant who unknowingly selects the killer on The Dating Game. However, upon realizing the true nature of her chosen bachelor, Bradshaw decides to cancel their date. The unsettling scenario paints a vivid picture of a woman’s close encounter with a twisted murderer. Daniel Zovatto delivers a chilling portrayal of the date from hell, making this film a must-see for thriller enthusiasts.

Ian McDonald penned the script for “Woman of the Hour,” which showcases his remarkable storytelling skills. Kendrick, along with Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, and Raphael Margules, serve as producers for the film. Furthermore, Stephen Crawford and Andrew Deane take on the roles of executive producers, while Tracy Rosenblum contributes as a co-producer. The film’s financing is provided by AGC Studios, under the guidance of Stuart Ford. CAA Media Finance and Range Media Partners brokered the deal between Netflix and the production team.

As the Toronto Film Festival unfolds, “Woman of the Hour” stands out as a captivating and eerie tale that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut promises to be a thrilling entry into the world of filmmaking, while the exceptional cast and creative team behind the project ensure an unforgettable cinematic experience. Netflix’s acquisition of this groundbreaking film signifies the streaming giant’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge content to its viewers.
